“Blood Moon” nails are set to be spooky season’s hottest trend, say experts

Forget blood drips and glitter bats, this year’s wearable Halloween manicure is a deep glowing red, and beauty experts are calling it “blood moon”. Think a deep glossy burgundy base, finished with a shimmering chrome cat-eye effect that shifts in the light.

The trend is being driven by the season’s fastest-growing nail searches. Pinterest searches for “burgundy chrome nails” are up 300% whilst searches for “autumn cat-eye nails” are up 200%, suggesting people are looking for a seasonal nail look that feels wearable rather than costume-y.
Annabelle Taurua, beauty expert at Fresha, says the look is the perfect nod to spooky season without committing to gimmicky nail art.

Why is the trend set to take over?

“Blood Moon nails are a Halloween nail that can actually be worn all month long. Burgundy is already a popular autumnal shade, but the chrome cat-eye finish gives it that glossy, otherworldly look.

What makes this trend so popular is that it has that dramatic, Halloween-ready feel without being too obvious. You can forget the classic mini pumpkins, blood drips and glittery bat nail art that make them wearable for only a week or so, and get the same spooky feel with a look that is wearable throughout the whole of autumn and winter”, says Annabelle.

How to get the look

Annabelle suggests starting with a deep, rich burgundy base colour and asking your nail tech for a magnetic cat-eye gel in that shade.

“The cat-eye effect is created using a magnetic gel polish and a magnet, which pulls the magnetic shimmer particles in your preferred direction across the nail. To get that moon-glow-like effect, ask your nail technician to pull the particles towards the tip, or into a slightly off-centre line through the length of the nail.”

Annabelle says the look is easy to adjust to suit your personal style.

“Whilst the full look makes for a gorgeous statement manicure, it is an easy look to dial up or down to suit any particular personal preferences.

If you want a more understated look, you can dial back your overall manicure by using the “blood moon” look on a couple of nails as an accent, or across all nails but only on the tips, for an elevated seasonal French tip look!

However, if you are keen to really lean into the Halloween aesthetic, you can pair the look with a black French tip or mini chrome nail art like stars or crescent moons or a few small diamantes.”
