BITCOIN FALLS TO $74,915 AFTER CLARITY ACT FAILURE AS MARKETS AWAIT A MORE HAWKISH FED

Bitcoin remains under strong bearish pressure during Wednesday’s September 16 session, extending losses from the previous day. The world’s largest cryptocurrency fell about 1.8% to the $74,915 area after down more than 3% on Tuesday, amid regulatory uncertainty in the United States, rising bond yields, and expectations of another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

One of the main catalysts behind the decline was the failure of the Clarity Act in the U.S. Senate. The procedural vote ended 49-50, well short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. The bill sought to establish a clearer regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets, including a clearer division of responsibilities between the SEC and the CFTC. The outcome therefore represented a significant setback for an industry that had been hoping for greater regulatory certainty.

The impact quickly spread across the broader cryptocurrency market. XRP fell nearly 10% toward $1.30, while Ethereum declined about 5% to approximately $2,410 and Solana fell close to 5%, trading slightly above $97. Dogecoin also fell nearly 5%, showing that the pressure is not limited to Bitcoin but is affecting major digital assets across the market.

Leveraged position liquidations also rose alongside the market reaction. More than $300 million in positions were liquidated over a short period after market sentiment deteriorated, increasing volatility and accelerating some downward moves. Bitcoin, which traded near $82,000 approximately two weeks ago, has lost around $7,000 from those levels, highlighting a significant shift in risk appetite.

However, the failure of the Clarity Act does not necessarily mean that the legislation is permanently dead. The vote concerned the procedural step required to move the bill toward debate, and further negotiations could still take place. At the same time, agencies such as the SEC and CFTC could continue developing rules for the digital asset market using their existing regulatory powers. However, this process could provide less clarity than legislation passed directly by Congress.

Adding to the regulatory uncertainty is an event that could prove even more important for financial markets: the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision. Investors are assigning a probability of more than 90% to a 25-basis-point rate hike, which would raise the federal funds target range from 3.50%-3.75% to 3.75%-4.00%. If confirmed, it would be the first U.S. interest rate increase since July 2023, marking an important shift in the monetary policy cycle.

For Bitcoin, the real risk may lie not only in the 25-basis-point increase, which the market has largely priced in, but also in the signals the Fed provides about its next moves. Investors will be paying close attention to the new economic projections and remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, looking for clues on whether September represents an isolated adjustment or the start of a new period of monetary tightening.

The interest rate environment has also become particularly challenging for digital assets because U.S. Treasury yields have risen sharply. The 10-year Treasury yield temporarily climbed above 5%, making fixed-income instruments more attractive and raising the opportunity cost of holding higher-risk assets. A scenario in which interest rates remain elevated for longer could continue to reduce liquidity available for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies.

From a price perspective, the $74,000-$75,000 area has become an immediate reference zone for Bitcoin. A sustained break below this range could increase attention on lower levels, while the 200-day moving average is currently around $70,000, making it a relevant technical reference should the correction continue. Conversely, stabilization above $75,000, accompanied by a less hawkish message from the Fed, could partially ease selling pressure.

In conclusion, Bitcoin faces one of September’s most important trading sessions as two major sources of uncertainty converge: the failure of the Clarity Act and the possibility of the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate hike in more than three years. With Bitcoin around $74,915, XRP near $1.30, and significant losses across Ethereum, Solana, and other cryptocurrencies, the market is showing a clear decline in risk appetite. Attention now shifts to the Fed and, in particular, Kevin Warsh’s message regarding the future path of interest rates. A more hawkish stance could keep pressure on Bitcoin and bring the $70,000 area back into focus. At the same time, signals of caution about further rate increases could support market stabilization after sharp losses in recent sessions.
