Leicestershire Family Take on Challenge in Tribute Local Hero

A Leicestershire family are preparing to hike up Yr Wydffa (Snowdon) this month, in memory of their cousin who sadly died last August.

Russell Gallacher, originally from Leicestershire, joined the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards in 1994 at just 17 years old. Over a 30‑year career, he became known for his leadership, humility, and commitment to helping others. He rose to the rank of Major in 2015 and later moved to The Royal Yeomanry, where he played a key role in training and mentoring younger recruits. Russell died suddenly whilst at work last August, at the age of just 48.

Earlier this year, Darcey Connor, age 14 and her brother Harry, age 11 told their parents Dan and Sally they wanted to do something meaningful in Russell’s honour. The family of four, joined by Russell’s younger brother Luke, will now take on a 20km trek to the 1,085m summit of Yr Wydffa on Friday 10 April, along with their cocker spaniel, Benji as a tribute to Russ.

Darcey said: “I’m excited and nervous for the challenge, but it’s a great cause so I will do my best.” And Harry added: “I really hope I can get to the top and not be out of puff, this will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done”.

The family is also aiming to raise money for veterans’ charity Help for Heroes. Darcey and Harry have already begun their fundraising efforts, organising a cake sale and rallying support from friends and family. According to their dad Dan, the response has been fantastic.

Dan said: “Darcey and Harry really sparked the idea for something we could all prepare for. None of us have done anything like this before but we’re up for the challenge and proud to be supporting Help for Heroes. Russ was someone who always looked out for others. It feels like a fitting way to recognise his service and the impact he had on so many people.”
