Budget-friendly Christmas Wonderland: How UK parents are transforming their homes on a shoestring

With rising living costs continuing to affect households, more families are planning ahead to make Christmas affordable. Recent research shows that 58% of UK adults now budget specifically for Christmas, and a quarter (26%) save throughout the year to help spread the cost. Another study reveals that 29% of consumers are switching to less expensive retailers due to cost-of-living pressures.

With only a month to go until Christmas, the countdown has begun. Many households put their decorations up from 1 December, and for the festive enthusiasts, the tree goes up as soon as the Halloween decorations come down.

Last year, almost a third of Brits put their decorations up before December, according to a survey commissioned by Temu. One of these early decorators is Natasha Lawless, a 42-year-old mother from Manchester, whose level of preparation rivals that of Santa’s elves.

Natasha completes 90% of her Christmas shopping by September, and during weekends leading up to the 25th she even decorates her neighbours’ homes alongside her full-time job in human resources.

Her own home receives a complete festive makeover. Natasha puts up five Christmas trees, and every room is touched by Christmas. Bedrooms, the kitchen, living room, hallway and even the downstairs toilet all receive her attention.

Last year, she surprised her daughter by turning her bedroom into a winter wonderland. Shopping on Temu, she bought curtains, pillows, a rug, wall stickers, hanging decorations and signs to create a space that looked ready for a Pinterest board.

“I just have a vision in my head of what I want. Sometimes I will see a particular item in the shop and then arrange the whole theme around it.”

For many people, decorating the home is one of the most enjoyable parts of the festive season, and it does not have to be expensive. With the cost of living continuing to rise, marketplaces such as Temu offer a useful option for those seeking quality and affordable décor.

“My husband wishes I had a budget. Although I saved probably over £100 shopping on Temu.”

To achieve a similar look, Natasha recommends beginning with the basics. Spend at least 30 minutes fluffing your tree and shaping the branches in different directions to make it look more realistic. Use baubles of different sizes and place the larger ones first. Fill any gaps with smaller ones. Cluster decorations together using pipe cleaners to create a stronger visual effect. Try different textures such as feather boas instead of traditional tinsel. Natasha also recommends B&M, Home Bargains and The Range for good value festive buys.
