Leading recruitment company, Pursuit Resources, which supports companies across Essex, is on a mission to boost wellbeing in the workplace.
To mark World Wellbeing Week (24-30 June), Pursuit’s managing director, Lorraine Phair, has provided her top tips to being happy at work. She explains: “We spend more waking hours at work than anywhere else, so it’s vital we do something we love and enjoy. At Pursuit we’re constantly matching companies with candidates. It’s essential we fit the right people for the job. The best matches ensure the company and the employee thrive.”
TOP TIPS FOR HAPPINESS IN THE WORKPLACE
‘If you do something you love, you’ll never work another day in your life’ – If you enjoy what you do, you’re probably already using your skills and talents in a role that gives you job satisfaction. Most people love doing something they’re good at, so make sure you align your career choices with what you do best.
Stress is one of the biggest issues in the workplace. Latest figures¹ reveal employees in the UK take on average 7.8 days sick leave a year, up two days from pre-pandemic levels. If you’re feeling stressed, try to work out what are the main causes. Talk to your line manager and see how you can gain support.
Look at your pay check. Financial wellbeing is vital to unlocking your personal happiness. Do you feel valued for the work that you do? If not, assess whether you think your salary is fair. Are other companies paying the same? Consider your options and act. If you feel you deserve a raise, politely ask for one, or review other opportunities in your sector.
Do you feel recognised? One of the biggest issues in employee relations is staff not feeling recognised for the work they do. Managers need to take this onboard and ensure they give each staff member the recognition they need and deserve.
WFH v. office? Post pandemic we’re all enjoying so much more flexibility in the workplace, which has opened up so much more opportunity. But are we all happy working from home, or a mix of home and office? For many it fits well with their work life balance, but still makes them feel lonely and miss their work mates. We all need connections to thrive – getting the right mix for yourself is the ideal option.
Have fun! Work needs to be stimulating and enjoyable. We need our workplaces to be vibrant and know our employers’ care. Whether it’s free doughnuts on a Friday, or a couple of duvet days a year, everyone needs to enjoy going to work.
