The rise of the garden reading room and how to create your own
With 2026 designated the National Year of Reading by the National Literacy Trust, more people are looking to slow down, switch off and rediscover the simple pleasure of a good book. But alongside that shift, there’s growing demand for somewhere calm and comfortable to read.
Enter the garden reading room.
Tucked away from the main house, these spaces are designed with one thing in mind – creating a quiet retreat. Soft natural light, comfortable seating and shelves lined with books all play a part in turning a garden building into somewhere you genuinely want to spend time.

Design expert Sarah Rumbles said: “There’s definitely a growing desire for spaces that feel calm and separate from everyday life. A reading room is a great example of that. It’s somewhere you can step away from distractions and properly unwind.
“Because garden buildings are detached from the house, they naturally feel more peaceful. With the right positioning, plenty of natural light and a comfortable set-up, they can become a really special place to spend time.”
Design plays a big part in making the space work. Positioning the building to make the most of natural light, layering textures such as throws and cushions, and incorporating built-in or freestanding shelving can all help to create a cosy, inviting feel.
Fully insulated garden rooms also mean the space can be used throughout the year, whether it’s a bright summer morning or a colder winter afternoon.
How to create your own garden reading room
* Choose a quiet spot in the garden, away from the main flow of activity
* Position windows and doors to maximise natural light
* Invest in comfortable seating that encourages you to stay a while
* Layer in soft furnishings to create warmth and texture
* Include plenty of storage for books, whether shelving or built-in units
As reading continues to grow in popularity, the idea of having a dedicated space for it is becoming increasingly appealing. For many, the garden reading room offers a simple but effective way to carve out time and space for themselves.
