How much to buy Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse? A real estate expert answers
The analysis conducted by a Malibu brokerage reveals the price tag attached to Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse.
For the valuation, experts at RubyHome, compared the average sale price for comparable Malibu homes with similar amenities, plus an additional premium of 10% to estimate the market price for the one-of-a-kind residence.
The DreamHouse is a 3,500-square-foot all-pink single-family home featuring a swimming pool, Pacific Ocean views, and an interior designed by Jonathan Adler, complete with Barbie furniture.
The Airbnb listing describes the space as “Placed perfectly above the beach with panoramic views, this life-size toy pink mansion is a dream come true!”
According to CMLS data compiled by RubyHome, comparable homes in the area, such as those with a similar location, pool, and views, fetch $9.1 million (£7.21m).
Considering the mansion’s iconic design and Barbie’s cultural value, it could bump the price of the doll’s DreamHouse to an eye-watering $10 million (£7.93m) – almost three times the average home value in Malibu – or $2,880 (£2,267) per square foot.
If Barbie became a landlord, leasing the property would fetch an estimated $77,412 (£55,416) per month.
If sold, Barbie can expect to pay an estimated $780,000 (£614,273) in closing costs.
With a 20% down payment, Brits need to make a minimum of $2 million (£1.57m) a year to afford the home.
Airbnb booking opens on July 17, but only four lucky guests will experience a one-night stay for two at the property on July 21 and 22.
The house is privately owned and not currently for sale.
Tony Mariotti, CEO of the Malibu brokerage RubyHome, commented: “Barbie’s marketing has been everywhere this summer. In the build-up to the movie’s release, this unique property appeared on Airbnb, leading eager fans to rush to glimpse the real-life dollhouse, complete with a maximalist Barbie-themed interior. While it certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste, the 3,500 square foot space, views of the Pacific Ocean, private pool, and totally unique design result in a hefty price tag for the property. It will be fascinating to see how much demand the Airbnb listing creates over the two nights it’s open to guests.”
