Secret daughter of jazz legend Louis Armstrong pay tribute to ‘generous’ and caring father
JAZZ legend Louis Armstrong was a generous and supportive father, according to his “secret daughter”.
Speaking about a new documentary which details their relationship, Sharon Preston-Folta told GB News: “From the time he started seeing my other mother, he supported her. He supported us financially through his life and there was even money left for us after he passed for a short period
“He was very generous. He bought us a home through his manager, Mr Glaser, and we lived in Mount Vernon and I had an upper middle class life. I was very fortunate. My mother was a stay at home mum and she was able to do it and we had a home.
“So there were great opportunities, but we just didn’t see him a lot, of course, but when we did it was really special.”
In a discussion with Michael Portillo, she said: “I also played the accordion for him on occasion when he came to the house. But he was a little intimidating to play for.
“I always knew even when he was with me or not that he cared, because he communicated a lot through letters and his audio letters which he would send on reel to reel tape. When I was with him, it was always But, as I grew older, it just remained just more surfacey. I would say that we shared a love and an excitement to see one another.”
