Lapland or the Lake District? Christmas Brainteaser

Located in northern Finland, Lapland is a hotspot (or could it be coldspot?) for Christmas holiday goers every year. But could our very own county of Cumbria provide a great alternative?

Wheelwrights are challenging you to guess whether each of the following images are taken in the Lake District, or Lapland, and they’re sure to get your brain ticking. Answers at the end!

5 Destinations not to miss in the Lakes this Winter

To help you plan your trip, Wheelwrights have identified five places which are perfect for a winter visit to the Lake District.

1. Ambleside Roman fort

Located near Lake Windemere, the Ambleside roman fort dates back to the 2nd century, likely built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Surrounded by stunning scenery, you can walk around the ruins in this peaceful and quiet spot this winter.

2. Langdale fells

The Langdale fells are a popular collection of pikes with climbers, fell runners and hikers, offering breath-taking views of the surrounding area. Prepare well and wrap up warm if heading out for a walk, as high wind and snow are likely!

3. Lake Windemere

The largest lake in the aptly named Lake District and in England itself, Windemere is a great place for an idyllic Winter boat trip. Warm up with a cup of tea in a café in one of the neighbouring towns of Windermere and Bowness-on-Windemere.

4. The Armitt Museum

Home to the collections of Britain’s beloved Beatrix Potter, take a break from the cold in this museum located in Ambleside. Exhibitions this winter include “The Pull of the Fells” which aims to showcase the way the outdoors positively affects the mind, running until the 23rd of December 2022.

5. Colwith Force

Another Ambleside gem, the Colwith Force is a 40 foot waterfall on the river Brathay, dropping several stages. Offering amazing views, this powerful force of nature isn’t one to miss in the especially magical season of winter.
