North London based teacher stars in brand-new Get into Teaching TV advert – inspiring the next generation of teachers

A new England-wide TV advert starring north London based maths teacher Ben Goodwin is set to air, that aims to inspire the next generation of teachers. The advert – live on TV from this week – follows the career trajectory of fictional maths teacher ‘Mr Joseph’, from his first day in the classroom as a nervous new teacher, to progressing to head of maths. Real-life teacher Ben Goodwin stars as Mr Joseph, highlighting the milestones of teaching and how exciting and varied being a teacher can be. The advert spotlights the personal growth and progression the profession offers, all whilst shaping the lives of young people.

Ben has always had a passion for maths and enjoyed helping people to learn and reach what he calls “that ‘oh!’ moment”. His journey is a real-life example of how other soon-to-be graduates can realise their potential for a career in teaching. He got a real taste for teaching his favourite subject after tutoring when he first graduated from university. Describing maths as the ‘language of the universe’, being able to explore many complex concepts, Ben’s passion for the subject since his school days is something he is now able to share with his students today.

The new film, created as part of the Department for Education’s Get Into Teaching campaign, will air across TV in the commercial breaks of popular shows such as Love Island. It will appear on TV networks and video on demand, as well as in cinemas. It’s part of a wider multi-channel campaign which is running across social, out of home and audio advertising.

Commenting on his involvement in the filming, Ben Goodwin, a maths teacher at Fortismere School in Muswell Hill, North London, said:
“There is no other job out there quite like being a teacher, and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this new campaign to show others just that. There’s no denying it’s hard work, but the rewards and opportunity to grow as a person certainly outweigh that. No two days are ever the same – the role stretches and challenges you, but in the best way. My students continue to surprise, impress and make me smile every day. As a teacher, you really get to know the young people and share their formative years with them, helping to mould them and watch them grow into young adults, which is an incredible experience. This isn’t something you can do with other jobs: seeing you’re making a difference to their lives, whilst shaping your own.”

Roger Pope, spokesperson for the Get Into Teaching campaign, said:
“Our hope is that this new campaign resonates with those who are searching for a career they can feel fulfilled in and proud of, and that will give them as much as it gives their students. Teaching is a profession which allows you to make a real impact and grow to reach your full potential. Every day you’ll get the chance to see your pupils learn and flourish, whilst tapping into your own talents and passion for a particular subject.

“I would encourage anyone who has an inkling that teaching might be for them to visit the Get Into Teaching website to find out more about a career in the classroom and the free support available.”

For helping to shape the next generation, you’re entitled to a competitive salary, generous holidays, and a substantial pension. All qualified primary and secondary teachers will have a starting salary of at least £30,000 – this will be higher for teachers working in London.
