Renewable ammonia from Mexico: Hy2gen signs cooperation agreement with Mexican state of Campeche

Hy2gen, the global producer of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen derivative plants, is planning to construct a 200 MW renewable ammonia production plant in Campeche, Mexico. The project, named MARENGO, is expected to initially produce 180,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually for customers in the European Union. The renewable commodity, made from nitrogen and hydrogen, has great potential to decarbonise industry and transport sectors such as shipping.

Layda Elena Sansores (Governor of Campeche), Angélica Lara Pérez Ríos (representative of the regional authority La Semabicce), Wolfgang Dold (German Ambassador to Mexico), the GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) represented by Marco Hüls and Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen AG, and its local project development partners signed a cooperation agreement for further feasibility studies.

“MARENGO will play an important role in the production of renewable ammonia for the European Union,” says Hy2gen CEO Cyril Dufau-Sansot. “This is mainly due to the ideal conditions at the site location, such as constant wind and many hours of sunshine. MARENGO’s electricity needs will therefore be secured by a 415 MW wind farm and a 230 MW solar farm.”

Dufau-Sansot remains enthusiastic about the project. “For MARENGO, everyone involved is pulling in the same direction. The cooperation with the local authorities, the governor, and also the preliminary work with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH was always characterised by a sustainable pioneering spirit for us – progressive thinking and action is what it takes to achieve a climate-neutral future.”

Planning phase and start of construction

After the signing of the cooperation agreement, feasibility studies and FEED studies will follow, during which essential construction data and information on the operation of the production plant will be collected. These studies are expected to be completed after 24-36 months. The construction phase of the plant will then begin, with production expected to start by the third quarter of 2028. The project in Mexico further strengthens Hy2gen’s global presence and brings it much closer to its goal of becoming the world leader in the production of RFNBOs (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin).

Typically thought of as being an easy to clean area of the home, hard floors have risen in popularity in recent decades. Globally, hard floors are the most common floor type,2 and research released today by Dyson has uncovered poor cleaning habits that mean hard floors are likely to be harbouring an array of hidden nasties.
