Strong newcomer with 30 years of expertise – Hy2gen welcomes Olaf Schöppenthau as Head of CoC Operations
Hy2gen, a global developer of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen derivative plants, has welcomed a highly competent new team member – Olaf Schöppenthau has been in the position of Head of Center of Competence Operations since the 1st of April. Schöppenthau, who has over 30 years of experience in various roles related to the operation and management of complex industrial processes, will actively support Hy2gen in their quest to become the market leader in the production of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs).
After studying process engineering at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, Schöppenthau worked for the energy service provider Technische Werke Ludwigshafen AG from 1994 to 2014. During these twenty years he held different positions, most recently taking on the task of Deputy Head of the Infrastructure and Planning Department. Schöppenthau then moved to Energiedienstleistungen Rhein Neckar GmbH, where he worked as technical director and operations manager at the Mannheim site and on behalf of Roche Diagnostic GmbH until the end. One of his focuses there was the introduction and updating of the DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 50001 quality management systems, as well as ensuring occupational safety.
Important addition to reach goal of market leadership in the hydrogen economy
“We are very pleased to be able to further strengthen our team of experts with Olaf Schöppenthau. His more than 30 years of experience in the energy industry will allow us to benefit from an impressive wealth of experience and to effectively take this into consideration for the planning of our projects. This will bring our company much closer to our goal of becoming the independent market leader in the production of RFNBOs,” says Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen.
“Renewable hydrogen and its derivatives are an elementary component of the energy transition. Hy2gen is a company that has been at the forefront of the hydrogen economy for years now. I am very pleased to be able to offer my expertise to a progressive company and to a topic that is extremely relevant for sustainable reasons,” says Olaf Schöppenthau.
About Hy2gen
Hy2gen AG, based in Wiesbaden, Germany, develops, finances, builds, and operates plants for the production of RFNBOs (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) worldwide. The company specialises in the entire product range – from renewable hydrogen, colloquially known as green hydrogen, to renewable ammonia and hydrogen-based e-fuels. Hy2gen uses these products to produce climate-neutral and competitive fuels and energy sources. The first plants are being built in France, Norway, Canada, and Germany. Hy2gen’s goal is to become the market leader in the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives for mobility, agriculture, and industry. Founded in 2017, the company’s first mover advantage is underlined by a current project pipeline in planning and construction of 880 MW and a project pipeline of over 12 GW of electrolysis capacity in development. In the first financing rounds, Trafigura and other private investors have already invested in Hy2gen. At the beginning of 2022, Hy2gen raised a further €200 million in investment for additional projects with the entry of Hy24, Mirova, CDPQ, and Technip Energies. This is a transaction with the highest amount ever paid in this segment.
