Sober October: Sober women have better chances on dating apps, study reveals

A study by The Bottle Club has revealed that women are in with a better chance on dating apps if they skip the alcohol.

Women received 29.1% more matches with men on Tinder when they made it clear they didn’t drink, and were deemed more attractive when they included interests in self care, wellness and sobriety.

In contrast, women received 300% more Tinder matches from other women when they displayed photos of alcohol and alcoholic interests such as cocktails, wine and nights out, confirming that a woman who drinks is seen to be more desirable to date to other women, over men.

However, the study found that when setting up two Hinge profiles for 72 hours, both men and women preferred the sober profile by an average of 27.6% – confirming Tinder to be the booziest of the two dating apps.

The study also found that when swiping through 100 women on Tinder, 52% displayed alcohol in their photos or alcohol related interests.

In contrast, the study also revealed that men received 150% more matches with women, and 173% more matches with other men on Tinder when their profile displayed drinks in their photos, and were deemed more attractive when they included an interest in beer, nights out and pubs in their profiles.

But why the double standard?

Chris Pleines, Dating Expert from Datingscout.com says: “This can be due to social prejudice against women drinking. If a woman uploads a picture showing her having a merry time with others over a glass of alcoholic beverage, she might be perceived as a drunk, or someone who lacks poise.”

“Men who drink are seen as masculine, social beings who know how to keep company.”
