Expert reveals tips on how motorcyclists can stay safe in the rain
The UK is known for its rainy days and miserable weather, especially during winter. Not only is the rain inconvenient, it can also make it more dangerous for road users, including motorcyclists. But how can people stay safe in rainy conditions?
To help motorcyclists ride safely in the rain, Christopher Wood, from The AA, has shared tips on how to navigate rainy conditions this winter
Expert reveals tips on how motorcyclists can stay safe in the rain
Maintain a Steady and Reduced Pace:
Riding at a steady and reduced pace in rainy weather is essential. This helps ensure that your tyres maintain contact with the road, providing better control of your bike. Avoid riding too fast for the conditions to prevent a loss of traction and control.
Avoid Sudden Movements
Steer clear of sudden movements such as rapid braking or sharp steering. These actions can be riskier in rainy conditions, where the road surface may be slippery.
Increase Following Distance:
The reduced traction between your tyres and the wet road surface means your stopping distance will increase. Maintaining a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you is crucial to allow for a longer stopping distance if needed.
Use Headlights for Visibility
Reduced visibility due to rain and spray can be challenging for both seeing and being seen on the road. Wood recommends turning on your headlights, especially in severe rain, to enhance visibility for yourself and other road users.
