Mould remover sales surge 1500% following spike in household fungus
Sales of dehumidifiers and mould remover have skyrocketed by up to 1559% after sub-zero temperatures resulted in a huge spike in cases of household fungus this winter.
Amid the UK’s icy temperatures, with crippling lows of -15C forecast to continue over the next week, the dampness caused by central heating systems has increased the chances of mould.
The form of fungus, which commonly occurs in bathrooms and kitchens where there’s excessive moisture and steam, can have serious health consequences, leading to respiratory problems.
Homeowners across the nation have seen mould appear at a drastic rate this winter, with some even witnessing fungal growths appearing within only 24 hours due to the damp conditions.
According to latest sales data from UK online marketplace OnBuy, the spike has resulted in sales of mould remover increasing by 1559% year on year, while dehumidifier sales have gone up 495%.
Similarly, OnBuy’s dehumidifier page views have increased by a staggering 3071% since September, as Brits desperately search for ways to battle mould in their homes.
Dehumidifiers are a great way to prevent mould. Using fans to draw warm air from the room, they remove moisture from the surroundings to help resist the growth of pesky fungus.
Mould remover is a reactive measure against fungi. The caustic cleaning compound, generally containing bleach, can be sprayed on to affected areas to fight and eliminate the spores that cause mould.
Liam Tickner, Category Manager at OnBuy, said: “Our dehumidifiers and mould removers have been flying off the shelves, and this week alone we’ve witnessed sales spike by an unbelievable 1559%.
“The unprecedented surge in sales fell perfectly in line with the UK’s plummeting temperatures. We saw massive sales during last weekend’s cold snap, which have continued this week.
“And with a long winter still ahead of us, we predict that Brits will continue snapping up mould removers and dehumidifiers at record rates.”
