One in five parents neglecting play time with children – new research reveals work is the key a barrier to time with children

New research launched today has found that almost one in five (18%) parents haven’t played with their child(ren) in two or more days, or can’t remember the last time they did. As parents filter back into offices following time at homes with their families, many (61%) are finding work as a barrier to time with their children.

The research, from Ingka Centres, reveals 54 per cent spend less than four hours a week playing with their children – the equivalent of under three per cent of the week. That said, 48 per cent of UK parents believe that adults still need to play as they get older despite 12 per cent admitting they’ve forgotten how to.

While parents recognise the benefits play has on their children – including it being beneficial for children’s overall development (53%), having emotional and behavioural benefits (25%) and keeping children busy (24%), there are still barriers that get in the way of these memorable moments. Many parents feel as though work is too busy (61%), it is better for children to play with others their age (32%) and that children get bored of the toys they have (31%).

To help combat this worrying trend, Livat Hammersmith is hosting a series of fun, educational activities for the whole family this half term. The first of its kind Ocean Explorer’s Hub will give visitors the chance to fully immerse themselves and explore the wonders of the ocean. Whether visitors are out for the day or shopping, the Ocean Explorer’s Hub is specially designed to inspire parents and children to sustain the entertainment together.

Livat Hammersmith is a go-to destination for families year-round, having opened earlier this year. With a range of shops, food offerings and regular free workshops for locals, it’s no surprise the Ocean Explorer’s Hub is opening up in this new and welcoming community hub.

The activities in the Livat Hammersmith’s Ocean Explorer’s Hub are for the young and the young at heart, and are sure to be a hit with parents in Hammersmith, who reveal the top ways they still like to be playful in adult life:

As well as educational fun facts and games on offer at the Ocean Explorer’s Hub, children will be able to get hands-on as they play a twist on the iconic ‘Hook the bottle’ game, designed to learn about the impact of plastic waste on the ocean. A craft station will allow families to create Jellyfish lamps and Paper Plaice, all whilst getting hands on with shells and sand in a series of sensory sessions.

Families will also be able to explore the Ocean Explorer trail, following floor vinyls to hunt out a host of sea creatures hidden in and around the meeting place to be in with the chance of winning an explorer prize bundle from IKEA’s new BLAVINGAD range!

Natalia Petalina, Meeting Place Manager at Livat Hammersmith says: “We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our very first Ocean Explorer’s Hub, an inspirational space we’ve designed to encourage families to play with one another during their visit to Livat Hammersmith. We believe play is a basic human need and with a never-ending list of benefits, it should be ingrained in everything we do. We at Livat Hammersmith know that little ones and parents alike love visiting our meeting place to shop, explore and meet up with friends, so we can’t wait to see families using the space to come together, connect and have fun in new and exciting ways.”

The Ocean Explorer’s Hub will be open from 24th – 30th October from 11am – 5pm. For more information visit https://www.livat.com/en/hammersmith/events/the-ocean-explorers-hub to find more ways to play.
